Jada Pinkett Smith Discussed Her Marital Experience
Jada Pinkett Smith made the shocking revelation that she andWill Smith, have been estranged since 2016 during a candid interview on theTodayshow.The 52-year-old actress revealed to the host, Hoda Kotb, that she and her 55-year-oldAladdinactor have been estranged for seven years.
The actress confessed that her split from Smith was not“a divorce on paper”, but rather a mutual decision to part ways. Pinkett Smith told the television journalist:
“By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying.I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”
When Kotb, 59, questioned them about why they had not spoken out about being split up earlier, the mother of two responded that they were not“ready yet”.She further emphasized that she was married to the Oscar winner on New Year’s Eve 1997 and said they were
“Still trying to figure out, between the two of us, how to be in partnership. In regards to, how do we present that to people? We hadn’t figured that out.”

“Made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through … whatever.I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”

In the section of her new book,Worthy,Jada Pinkett Smithdescribed what it was like to have Chris Rock make fun of her alopecia before watching Will Smith physically assault theSpiralactor on live television.First of all, she did not believe it was real, just like many viewers. She wrote in her book (viaPEOPLE):
“When Chris was still standing afterward, I believed my observation to be true: Aha, this IS a skit.”
In her new book, she also discussed the incident at the 2022 Academy Awards when Smith punched Rock in the face after the comedian made a joke about her shaved head:
“Wehad been living separate livesand were there as family, not as husband and wife. But when I hear Will yell ‘wife’ in the chaos of the moment, an internal shift ofOh s— . . . I am his wife!happens instantly.”
Pinkett Smith continued by describing the feeling as being similar to when she was a teenager:
“Back in a club back in Baltimore, a fight has broken out, and s— could start popp’n. I’m aware that I’m at the Oscars in a beautiful but very heavy forest-green dress with a high neck, a zipper bodice, and a train a thousand miles long, and I’ve had to stay seated all evening.”
She furthered in the book:
“But no matter what, Will and I are in this together.”
Fans have long been fascinated by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s marriage. As soon as they got married, they were recognized as Hollywood royalty, which sparked a lot of rumors and conjecture. They are parents to two kids.
