Tom Holland’sSpider-Man: No Way Homewas the most anticipated film of 2021. Before its release, the film was the primary source of discussion regarding its multiversal plot and the theories surrounding who will appear in the film. In addition to the previous two versions of Spider-Man, supporting characters from the previous films were also strongly rumored to return in the film.

As the film’s release date came close, the promotional material showed the return of previous Spider-Man villains in the film. This increased the chances of supporting characters appearing in the film. It seems Marvel Studios also wanted to bring back many actors who played supporting roles in Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man films.

Spider-Man: No Way HomeInitially Included Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone, and Sally Field
Tom Holland‘s third installment in hisSpider-Mantrilogy had big shoes to fill after the incredible success of the previous two films and the character’s popularity in the Avengers films. Sony and Marvel took a bold step to make it a multiversal story, which brought up many exciting possibilities of bringing back characters from previous Spider-Man films.
WhileSpider-Man: No Way Homebrought back villains from the previous films including William Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Otto Octavius, and Jamie Foxx’s Electro, the films marked the return of two versions of Spider-Man played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. It seems Sony and Marvel also planned other characters from the previous Spider-Man films to appear in the film.

According to the book,MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, the writers of the film Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna wrote versions that includedKirsten Dunst‘s Mary Jane,Emma Stone‘s Gwen Stacy, and Sally Field’s Aunt May. But they decided to cut them out as the movie was already overstuffed.
Although it would have provided the film with some emotionally resonant moments by including these characters, they made it up by giving Marisa Tomei and Zendaya important roles to play in the film that led to the evolution of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Hence, it is understandable that they had to let go of some good ideas to make room for other better ideas.

Tom Holland is Eager to See What’s Next for Spider-Man
Tom Holland elevated Spider-Man inSpider-Man: No Way Hometo a place that showed his maturity and evolving sense of adulthood. By suffering losses and going through grief, the film left the character in such an exciting place for his future in the MCU.
Holland talked to The Hollywood Reporterabout his eagerness to know what’s next for the web-slinger and his openness to step down if this film was the end of his tenure of playing the character. He said,

“Thankfully, that is not my job. My job is to just say the lines on set. There are far cleverer people than me that have been given the task of writing future movies and coming up with new ideas. And as always, I’ll be very eager to see what they come up with.
But maybe we don’t top this movie. Maybe this movie is the perfect storybook ending for this chapter of Spider-Man. And if it’s time for me to step down and for the new person to step up, I would do so proudly.”
A fourth Spider-Man film is currently in development with Holland and Zendaya expected to return. It remains to be seen what Peter’s arc will be after everything he went through in the third installment.
