He detailed the creative battles he fought with Marvel, especially regarding certain scenes he was determined to keep.

According toHollywood Reporter, Whedon said,

“The dreams were not an executive favorite either — the dreams, the farmhouse, these were things I fought to keep. With the cave, it really turned into: They pointed a gun at the farm’s head and said, ‘Give us the cave, or we’ll take out the farm’ — in a civilized way. I respect these guys, they’re artists, but that’s when it got really, really unpleasant.”

Among these, the cave sequence, which featured Thor and Dr. Erik Selvig, portrayed by Stellan Skarsgard, held particular significance.

Whedon’s exit from Marvel left fans wondering about the reasons behind his departure. Although Whedon had played a pivotal role in building up the Marvel brand, he eventually chose to part ways with the studio. According to him, his decision was primarily driven by burnout rather than creative differences.

In his own words, Whedon shared with theOxford Union,

“It was five years that I was working on either Avengers or S.H.I.E.L.D. They handed me several hundreds of millions of dollars and said ‘Do what you do.’ I need to create a new challenge for myself because I will start to repeat myself.”

Whedon had invested a substantial portion of his time in the Marvel universe and felt it was time to shift his focus to other projects. Further, he disclosed,

“You know, I was their sort of consigliere for a while…but I sort of had my finger in all of the films in the second phase but then I just had to concentrate only on Ultron and sort of know that when it was done, I was just going to stop, so I made a completely clean break.”

However, this decision by the screenwriter sheds light on the complex interplay between artistic vision and practical considerations in filmmaking. Ultimately contributing to his departure from the Marvel cinematic universe.
