Ted Sarandos shared his experience regarding casting Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece at Netflix’s Q3 2023 earnings interview. He also talked about how the show secured its position as the top 1 in over 80 countries and compared its performance toStranger ThingsandWednesday.

What did Netflix’s co-CEO say regarding casting Iñaki Godoy’s Monkey D. Luffy?
Sarandos revealed atNetflix’s Q3 2023earnings interview thatOne Piecewas ranked at the top, number 1 position in 84 countries. He even said,“It was something Stranger Things couldn’t do, that Wednesday couldn’t do,”before saying that the core reason for this was Luffy’s casting.
“Iñaki Godoy, who stars in the show, it was — one of the most difficult casting challenges in the history of our original programming was who’s gonna play Monkey D. Luffy,”Sarandos said.
“And he was right under our nose, right in our talent family,”he adds.
“So this is that kind of thing you could do well, a thing that’s hard to copy and gives us kind of competitive running room from our competitors, being able to do that more and more.”
“We discovered him a couple of years ago and had him in this great show in our Mexican series called Who Killed Sara?”He expressed his appreciation for the actor’s talent and praised how Godoy climbed up the ladders and became a“global superstar.”

Why was Iñaki Godoy selected for Monkey D. Luffy’s role in One Piece?
There were hundreds, if not more, actors whom the casting team considered to play the role of Luffy, but none of them portrayed that sweet balance of“heart, warmth, and chemistry,”which was required to make the audience“fall in love with these characters,”according to One Piece director Marc Jobst.
Iñaki Godoy had those exact set of traits needed and proved himself by performing“something crazy, and off-script, very deliberately, and it was like, ‘Oh, okay, he’s got some cheek and some charm, and some chutzpah to him,'”Jobst added. Godoy was praised by One Piece Mangaka, Eiichiro Oda, who said he“can’t imagine anyone else playing him.”and the Monkey D. Luffy’s Japanese voice actor Mayumi Tanaka.
