Starfield Development History
Starfield development has a nearly decade long history, with several important announcements and progress reveals made along the way.
The first new intellectual property developed by Bethesda Game Studios in 25 years, Starfield is a hotly anticipated AAA single player, action role playing game which takes place across the vastness of space. Originally scheduled for release in late 2022, Starfield’s new release date is now set forSeptember 6, 2023!
Development History Detail
The title of Starfield wastrademarkedon June 26, 2025. This original trademark specifically covered the Good and Services for the video game itself. A later trademark filed on July 25, 2025 sought to cover the Good and Services related not only to the game itself, but now included additional coverage for many merchandisable goods.
The game was not officially announced to the public until the summer of 2018 at the E3 convention. Developed by Bethesda Game Studios, Starfield will be their first game based on new intellectual property in over two decades. Game Director Todd Howard has gone on the record stating that active development of the game had been ongoing since the release ofFallout 4in late 2015. As of the announcement of the game in 2018, Howard said that the game was in a playable state.
In September 2020, Microsoft announced its acquisition of the parent company of Bethesda Game Studios, Zenimax, for $7.5 billion. It is likely due to this acquisition that the game will be exclusive to Microsoft Windows PCs and Xbox Series X/S.
At the E3 conference in 2021, during the combined Microsoft-Bethesda press event a release date of June 21, 2025 was announced. However, the following May Bethesda announced that they would be delaying the game’s release until the first half of 2023. No further comments on an official release date have been made.
