Robert Downey Jr is one of the most influential actors in the Hollywood industry with his most iconic role being that of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He set up the foundation of the franchise in such a way that it was Tony Stark’s story that was told in the course of many phases. In his journey, Iron Man brought about a sense of growth not only within himself but also in the characters who stood by him.

In this, there came to be a relationship between that of Downey Jr’s Iron Man and Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. It would seem although that Downey happened to have a small issue when it came to Holland taking over such an iconic role.

Tom Holland’s British Heritage was a Problem for Robert Downey Jr

Robert Downey Jrrevealed in an interview onJimmy Kimmel Livethat he was rather happy about seeing Spider-Man becoming a part of the franchise. This made the franchise introduce not only a much-loved hero but also allowed the iconic superhero’s story to become a meaningful addition. Spider-Man has always been a character that better resonated with teenagers and those who were more optimistic in an otherwise dark work. So when Tom Holland was hired to play the role, Downey was ecstatic. Except for one slight problem.

“I like this Tom Holland guy. It’s about the person.”

TheIron Manactor slightly regarded, although in jest, that he did not appreciate how Spider-Man, a character who lived in the hearts of every single child, was being played by a British actor. He stated that Peter Parker was one hero everyone could relate to when growing up and that had made him an important part of everyone’s lives. So to have a British actor play the character was a sudden change Downey did not expect. However, it was Tom Holland and his personality that changed his mind.

Spider-Man Made His Way into Robert Downey Jr’s Heart

Robert Downey Jr talked to Jimmy Kimmel regarding the impact Spider-Man had on his childhood. Growing up, he became the hero the actor most looked up to. His snarky yet funny nature that followed with humourous quips was something that not only attracted him but also many people across the world.

“To me, Spider-Man was my, that was my whole deal. He was funny, he was cool, he was young like us.” He then joked, “I mean I don’t know, I didn’t get bit by a radioactive spider that I recall.”

Downey could resonate with his character and enjoy him even more because of how much he looks up to Peter Parker.
