If you’re looking forward to the brutality ofMortal Kombat 1, you may first want to prepare for the blood to flow from your internal storage as the install size for the game has been revealed for the highly anticipated fighting game. Hot on the heels ofStreet Fighter 6and following a string of acclaimed games in the long-running franchise, the newMortal Kombatgame will require you to have 140GB free, at least on Xbox Series X|S.

Mortal Kombat 1 releases later this week, but those with slow internet may want to preload it now to prepare.

Given the console includes a 1TB SSD, with roughly 802GB of that being usable after the operating system and other required installs, that means the game will take up roughly 17.4% of the Xbox Series X’s internal drive. Assuming the same install size on PlayStation 5, that would be roughly 21% of your console’s usable storage being dedicated solely to the base game ofMortal Kombat 1, not including any likely future downloadable content.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be ruthless to your storage.

In comparison, I decided to attempt to installMortal Kombat 11,alongside the 4K story content as well as the Aftermath story and all DLC fighters to my Xbox Series X, and my console said I was preparing to install 91GB of content, making this initial install is over 50GB larger. Without the story or other content installed, the base game ofMK11is just 48.8GB.

Mortal Kombat 1 Eats Storage for Breakfast

It is worth noting that the 140GB install size includes all base game content at launch.Mortal Kombat 1will allow users to uninstall various pieces of the game that they do not need at any given point in time, including the game’s hefty story mode. Story mode, Invasions, and 4K assets all add quite a bit to the install size, and by uninstalling Story mode and Invasions, you can save yourself over 25GB of storage space from the game.

Additionally, it has been noted that the Series S version ofMortal Kombat 1takes up about 101GB rather than 140GB due to the lack of 4K content on that console. Granted, that is still over 27% of the usable storage available on the standard Series S model (a higher storage version recently released on September 1) so players will likely still have to make some major decisions about what games to keep installed.

Mortal Kombat 1is just the latest in a long line of games that have shocked gamers with their massive install sizes. As solid-state drives become more and more of a necessity for gaming, especially since they are part of the core designs of both Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles, many PC gamers will soon face a tough decision: start installing many of their favorite games or upgrade their significantly slower storage to a solid state solution to support the suite of new games that essentially require it.
