Jessica Alba is one of the most gifted actresses of her generation, starring in groundbreaking films such asSin City,Stretch, andMachete. The actress is also known for her role as Susan Storm, The Invisible Woman, inFantastic Fourand its sequel,Rise of the Silver Surfer.

The actress starred in James Cameron’sDark Angelafter the director had completed his blockbuster romance film,Titanic. A lot went behind the actress being chosen for the role of Max Guevara. Not only were a staggering number of actresses auditioned for the role, but Cameron circled back multiple times to find the right person for the role.

James Cameron was not impressed by Jessica Alba’s audition
For the TV series, Cameron’s first venture after the mammoth undertaking that wasTitanic,the director allegedly auditioned over a thousand actresses for the lead role, before settling on Jessica Alba. However, theAvatardirector was not very happy with the way Alba was represented. Hesaid
“But she was 17 years old. She was not particularly well represented at the time. She didn’t present herself all that well.”

However, given the understanding of the talent that the actress had, Cameron ended up casting Alba. Concerning what he was looking for in particular, Cameron had a clear image in his, mind to begin with. While cast for the character of Max, the directorsaid:
“First and foremost, we wanted someone who had the acting chops, and Jessica has an enormous amount of craft. It’s hard to find that in someone who’s still relatively young and doesn’t have years and years of experience”

The actress was grateful for being cast as Max, seeing Cameron’s blessing as a big part of her career, allowing her to go on to better projects.

James Cameron says that men are not against strong female characters like Max
Cameron strongly believed that stronger female characters were not something that “put off’ men. The director has put out several works that feature a was could be considered as a ‘strong female character. TheAliensdirectorsaid:
“I also find that men are not put off by strong women in films. When i started doing these types of characters, there was the sense among the powers that be at the studios that it would push away the typical, young, male action audience. It’s not true. They want to see girls kick a** too, so its a win/win situation”
The director, along with Max inDark Angel, has launched some strong female characters that have left their mark in the history of American cinema. Be it Neytiri in hisAvatarfilms, Ellen Ripely inAliens, or even Rose inTitanic, Cameron has always treated his female leads with the same amount of respect as he renders to the male ones, giving them agency and capabilities that show them as whole human being rather than just archetypes that serve as the hero’s supporting cast.
