Harrison Ford Wanted To Kill Off Han Solo Earlier

After his appearance in the first two films, it was reportedly unclear whether Harrison Ford would return for the third film as he had a starring role as Indiana Jones. Lucas had actually planned on killing Han Solo in it. According to producer Gary Kutz, the plan for the third film and the sequels were completely different than what came to be.

He said in an interview with the LA Times (viaCBR),

“The original idea was that they would recover Han Solo in the early part of the story and that he would then die in the middle part of the film in a raid on an Imperial base. George then decided he didn’t want any of the principals killed. By that time there were really big toy sales and that was a reason.”

Ford also reportedly felt that his character lacked enough emotional depth or a good effect on the storyline as it was mostly Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker who was the protagonist of the series. He reportedly said in aninterview,

“I thought Han Solo should die. I thought he ought to sacrifice himself for the other two characters[Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa]. I said,’ He’s got no mama, he’s got no papa, he’s got no future. He has no story responsibilities at this point so let’s allow him to commit self-sacrifice.’”

Screenwriter Lawrence Kasden also agreed with Ford’s sentiment. However, George Lucas seemed to have made up his mind. Han Solo would only die in the seventh film of the franchise,Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where he is killed by his son Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver.
