Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe inThor andlater starred inAvengers. While the first was just a small cameo, his second appearance was a full-fledged performance as the Earth’s mightiest heroes battled an alien invasion. But it wasn’t a performance that Renner was happy about.
Due to Hawkeye being under the thumb of Loki, Renner wasn’t able to portray the real Clint Barton for much of the movie. This made his experience far less enjoyable and rather tiring.

WhenJeremy Rennerstarred in the first-everAvengers, he had high hopes, much like the rest of his co-stars. However, he was left disappointed by the way Marvel treated his character, who had to spend much of his time playing a puppet to the God of Mischief, Loki.
While he understood exploring Clint Barton’s backstory wasn’t in the books, restricting his role to action scenes made him more frustrated for there wasn’t much to portray a character he had signed up to play. And this is what he toldThe Los Angeles Times(viaScreenRant).
“At the end of the day, 90% of the movie, I’m not the character I signed on to play. I’m literally in there for 2 minutes, and then all of a sudden… All I could really work on was the physical part of it all, because that didn’t change. That was just the biggest challenge to overcome in playing the guy. Also, we’re pretty much introducing a new superhero character to everyone in a movie where there’s a thousand superheroes. So there’s not a lot of back story or understanding we can really tell about who Clint Barton is, or Hawkeye, and is he working for SHIELD or not.”
Even though he felt distraught over his role, the actor maintained he was really happy being in the film and exploring the Marvel-verse.

Jeremy Renner Felt He Was A Terminator InThe Avengers
While talking toThe Los Angeles Times,Renner talked about his experience of playing Clint Barton aka Hawkeye. The actor stated that the most disturbing part of the role was that he felt like he was playing a Terminator.
“I think he’s already an interesting enough character. To really kind of take away who that character is and just have him be this sort of robot, essentially, and have him be this minion for evil that Loki uses. Again, I could just focus on the task. I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way.”
Even though the actor felt somewhat cheated to have his superhero character reduced to being a ‘robot’, he was glad to be in the movie and explore potential storylines.
