Actor Mark Hamill’s iconic portrayal of Luke Skywalker in theStar Warsfranchise has left an indelible mark on the world of cinema and pop culture. He first appeared as the character in the original 1977 film,Star Wars, which was later renamedStar Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The actor once explained that he didn’t have a good experience working with director J. J. Abrams, who directedStar Wars: The Force Awakens(2015), andStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker(2019). However, this wasn’t the reason why Hamill decided to leave behind the franchise.

In the originalStar Warstrilogy, actorMark Hamillworked with Carrie Fisher, who influenced countless viewers with their characters. Their return to the franchise in 2015’sStar Wars: The Force Awakenswas surely exciting, however, Fisher died of a sudden cardiac arrest in December 2016 at the age of 60. Fisher’s demise really affected Hamill and his perception about the franchise changed. In an interview with ABC News, the actor stated,
“It really has tarnished my ability to enjoy it to its fullest. I don’t care anymore on that level, because Han Solo is gone, Luke is gone and you just can’t get the band back together the way you wanted it to be, and it shouldn’t be that way… Rather than being sorry that we can’t have more of her, I’m just grateful that we had the time with her that we did.”

Hamill did ultimately appear inStar Wars: The Last Jedi(2017) andStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker(2019) after Fisher’s death. Over the course of the original trilogy and appearances in the sequels, Hamill’s portrayal of Luke Skywalker evolved, showcasing his versatility as an actor and his ability to convey the complexity of the character. Hamill’s contribution will always make him an integral part of the franchise.

Was JJ Abrams rude to Mark Hamill?
Hamill appeared in director JJ Abrams’Star Wars movies,Star Wars: The Force AwakensandStar Wars: The Rise of Skywalker(2019). The actor once revealed that he tried to pitch in an idea but the director ignored him,
“I tried to show it to JJ and he was accommodating but basically patted me on the head gave me a cookie and made me go away.”

Hamill wanted his character to have some backstory as the character appeared after so many years. So the actor came up to Abrams with his idea but the director sidelined it.
