Brie Larson has worked hard to establish herself as one of the leading actresses in Hollywood, but her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has not been viewed in the best of lights ever since she joined the franchise. In fact, her latest film,The Marvels, completely disregarded a lot of major plot details regarding Nick Fury.

Larson began her career in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Carol Danvers inCaptain Marvel, which received mixed responses from fans and critics alike. Even now, fans just simply couldn’t care less about Larson’s character. Things only got worse as fans are mostly apathetic about the MCU in general now.

The MarvelsDisregarded The Entirety Of Marvel’sSecret Invasion
The absence of references toSecret InvasioninThe MarvelsstarringBrie Larson, ended up confusing fans in a big way. After all,Secret Invasionset up a lot of important plotlines for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially when it came to Nick Fury in general.
A big deviation is definitely the portrayal of the Skrulls, as it was established inSecret Invasionthat they had no home other than Earth. However,The Marvelsreveals that the Skrulls have been residing on a completely different planet – a major misstep.

Another inconsistency is regarding Nick Fury’s portrayal in the show and then the film. InThe Marvels, Fury seemed happy and blissful, showing no sign of the dark events that he had to go through inSecret Invasion. On top of that, his wife revealed to be a Skrull in the series, was absent from the film even though she ventured into space with him at the end ofSecret Invasion. Therefore, this major omission in the Marvel cannon has only madeThe Marvelslook worse than expected.

The MarvelsWas A Box Office Letdown
The Marvelsstarring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris, was released on November 10th, 2023. Expectations for the film were virtually nonexistent as the Marvel Cinematic Universe is suffering from major apathy due to its reliance on the same old formula for every single movie.
To the surprise of no one, the film didn’t do well critically or commercially. According toVariety, the film made the record for the lowest-grossing domestic weekend opening for any Marvel film, grossing just $47 million domestically. It also has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 62% and IMDB of 6/10, making it just above average at best.

According toThe Hollywood Reporter, the movie received a 78-80% drop-off in its second weekend at the box office, making it the worst drop of any Hollywood superhero movie ever. Marvel has to go back to the drawing board and think of a new strategy for their next slew of movies if they want to capture fan attention again. Whether they end up doing that is a whole different conversation now.
