Oldman winning the Golden Globe Award was a surprise as the actor had been a vocal critic of the award and its organizers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The actor had bashed the HFPA publicly in an interview in 2014 withPlayboyand had gone as far as to urge people to boycott the show. He said,

“I know it certainly doesn’t mean anything to win a Golden Globe, that’s for sure…It’s a meaningless event. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is kidding you that something’s happening. They’re fcking ridiculous. There’s nothing going on at all…Boycott the fcking thing. Just say we’re not going to play this silly game with you anymore.”

Gary Oldman had a better view of the Oscars. However, the actor was humbler and appreciative when he won the Golden Globe Award forDarkest Hour.

Criticisms Against The Hollywood Foreign Press Association

Actor Gary Oldman’s statements against the Golden Globe Awards and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are not an isolated incident. The HFPA, which is a non-profit collective of foreign journalists who report on American entertainment to non-American countries, has come under fire for a lot of its practices.

Many journalists have termed it as a closed collective that does not make it easy for new members to join the association. There have also been allegations of bribery for decades, allowing voting members to favor other films.

In a 2015 report, theNew York Postpublished an expose on the malpractices of the HFPA and the Golden Globe Awards with a focus on the nomination of films such asBurlesqueandThe Tourist. An insider revealed that,

“Even though everyone in the industry knows that the awards lack any real credibility, they still generate huge publicity for their movies. And it’s a lot easier to curry favor with a few dozen HFPA members than it is to suck up to the Academy.”

Lately, the HFPA has come under sharp criticism for its lack of diverse members, especially Black members in the association. Studios such as Netflix, Amazon, and WB boycotting the organization, and NBC even refused to air the ceremony on its network. The HFPA has now been bought out and disbanded and is said to be transformed into a for-profit entity.
