The world loves Batman more than any other superhero. Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and a long list of other actors have all portrayed the Caped Crusader on film over the years. But, there were also Marvel stars who tried out for the superhero role but were unsuccessful.

Warner Bros. had to find a replacement forMichael KeatonforBatman Forever(1995) after he declined the offer to play the title character in a third Batman movie. Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake Gyllenhaal’s edgiest roles from films likeDonnie DarkoandNightcrawlerare reminiscent of Robert Pattinson’s dark, brooding performance inThe Batman. The actor was reportedly a candidate for the role of Bruce Wayne when Christopher Nolan was developing his ground-breaking reboot (The Dark Knight), according toCinemaBlend.
If Gyllenhaal had played Bruce in Nolan’s trilogy, he and Heath Ledger would have reunited for a much less endearing dynamic inThe Dark Knight.

Pierce Brosnan
Pierce Brosnanwas the leading candidate for the role of Bruce Wayne when Tim Burton’s firstBatmanfilm (1989) was in the planning stages. In contrast, as perThe Guardian, Brosnan declined the role because he did not want to play a comic book character.
The lead role was eventually given to Michael Keaton, who won over the audience with his convincing portrayal of Bruce Wayne.

Nicholas Hoult
The casting directors typically cast as many candidates as they can find when casting a new Batman. But because Matt Reeves had a clear vision of the impressionable, young Bruce Wayne he wanted on screen, the only actors on the shortlist for the Batman role were Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult.
Both actors allegedly appeared in an old Batsuit for their auditions, according toCollider. Previously, Hoult portrayed Hank McCoy / Beast in theX-Menfilms. Before deciding on Pattinson, Reeves, and Warner Bros. executives debated the two actors during the week following Memorial Day.
Willem Dafoe
When rumors began to circulate that Tim Burton had approached Willem Dafoe about playing the Joker in his firstBatmanmovie, fans naturally assumed that he was a contender for the role. The actor, however, revealed toMTV Newsthat he was in fact being considered for the role of Batman:
“Very early, they talked to me about playing Batman.”
Dafoe rose to prominence for his portrayal of the supervillain Norman Osborn / Green Goblin in MCU’s filmSpider-Man(2002), a role he reprised inSpider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
Although none of these Marvel actors were ever cast as Batman, their potential casting exemplifies the range of talent that can be found in the superhero genre. We can not help but smile at the thought of these Marvel actors donning the Dark Knight’s cape and cowl, even if it is only in our imaginations.
Robert Pattinsoneventually accepted the role in the last released superhero film,The Batman(2022). Additionally,The Batman – Part II’s production had already started by April 2022.The upcoming film is expected to be released on July 07, 2025.
